Clare Smith has always been fascinated by how photography is dependent on the tangible, physical world to make images. However, her interest lies within the translation of her physical subjects to explore intangible and physically invisible subjects/concepts in the creation of her work. Therefore the images she creates are often subtle contradictions between the medium of photography and the subjects she explores.

Near Infinity is concerned with the ephemeral, intangible nature of the horizon in relation to both the individual and the photographic medium.

The un-attainable nature of the horizon to the individual is heightened by the use of the photographic medium which needs a tangible, physical subject before the lens to make an image.

In contemporary culture we are surrounded by an ever increasing amount of imagery which we experience and consume at an ever increasing rate. In response to this Clare wanted to produce images which are profoundly still and timeless; where the viewer has the space before them to read their own meaning.

To date it has been exhibited at the Midlands Arts Centre and The Watershed in Bristol and was rated as one of the top five "must see" exhibitions by The Guardian at the time.
